Bulimus appressus von Martens, 1867 was originally described without a depiction of its shell, with the type locality indicated as "Java". In 1890, Boettger reassigned it under the genus Amphidromus Albers, 1850, naming it Amphidromus appressus (Von Martens, 1867). Subsequently, Fulton, in 1896, categorized it as a variety of Amphidromus palaceus (Mousson, 1848). This classification as a variety persisted through works by Pilsbry in 1900, Van Benthem Jutting in 1950, and Laidlaw & Solem in 1961. It was believed to be extinct until several specimens were rediscovered by the second author in Cipayung, Bogor, West Java in April 2022.
The shell of Bulimus appressus exhibits an elongated shape, a slightly tapered spire, a small aperture, and a monochrome yellow or white coloration devoid of varices, with appressed sutures. Based on these characteristics, this variety is reclassified as a subspecies of Amphidromus palaceus (Mousson, 1848), designated as Amphidromus palaceus appressus (von Martens, 1867). Three specimens have been deposited in MZB, Cibinong, Bogor, Indonesia. It is compared to the nominal subspecies Amphidromus palaceus palaceus (Mousson, 1848) and to Amphidromus toncruzi Dharma, 2012 from the Philippines, which exhibits sutures of the last whorl appressed to the penultimate whorl for 1.5 mm.
Furthermore, this paper addresses Bulimus perversus tener von Martens, 1867 from Mount Gedeh (Gede), West Java (van Benthem Jutting, 1950), characterized by a small, relatively thin shell with a slightly tapered spire and a monochrome light yellow coloration lacking varices. This taxon is also reclassified as a subspecies of Amphidromus palaceus (Mousson, 1848), denoted as Amphidromus palaceus tener (von Martens, 1867). A comparison with the nominal subspecies reveals differences in shell thickness and spire convexity.
